It's been a week since I posted a blog. I've been kinda busy!
Last Sunday night Dad and Michelle came to visit. They were here until Wednesday Evening. It was so good having them here. I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to do much with them, since I was only a week out of surgery. But Monday morning I woke up feeling like a new person. What a difference a week made! So we hit the road and did some shopping. It felt really good to get out of the house and get some fresh air (even if the air was so thick with humidity!) It was SO AWESOME to walk around Costco without HAVING to hold on to a cart and without my back killing me. A new NSV (Non-Scale-Victory). On Tuesday we did some more of the same. Wednesday we headed to the beach and it was so good to get in the water! Too bad the flies were biting and the rain started and we had to leave. But it was still a good time! We went to Maria's Restaurant in Amherstburg. The family all ate what looked like AMAZING meals - even the fish and chips looked great (and I don't like fish!) I had some chicken soup broth. It's pretty hard sitting watching everyone else eat really good meals and all you can "eat" is liquid. But it gets easier each day.
I tried to relax on Thursday and Friday and felt the best way to relax was to go swimming! (As you can see, I LOVE to swim!) It's been really good going swimming and not feel like a whale in the water. I know I have a LONG, LONG way to go before I am not obese, but I feel more energetic and more... alive! Since I love to swim so much, I feel like it's a win win when it comes to working out doing something I enjoy.
One of the biggest things I've learned this week is that portion size is a BIG thing when trying to lose weight, even for those who have not had weightloss surgery. I bought some small bowls at Dollarama this week and it's amazing how perception plays a big role too. If I fill one of these bowls with ice cream, it seems like I'm having a lot.
Yesterday I was able to eat chili for the first time since starting Optifast shakes 5 weeks ago. It's amazing how small my portion was compared to what I would have eaten before. The big bowl is what I would have used before surgery and it would have been FULL of chilli. When I ate chilli yesterday, I used the smaller bowl and I could only eat about a third of it before I felt full. It was incredible.
I'm also having a hard time getting used to taking my vitamins. This is a huge thing after surgery. Since I can't eat very much, I have to supplement my body with vitamins that I'm missing from food. I know it will be second nature eventually, but it's still hard to get used to!
Let's move on to the title of this post. We Weightloss-Surgery-ers are told ahead of time to expect stalls in our weightloss. The first one can happen after 2 weeks. Well, I was doing well at the beginning of this week and then from Wednesday to today there has been no movement in the scales. But that's okay. From all I've read, this is a good thing. My body is getting adjusted to the new eating regiment and it's actually getting ready to burn more fat. So I'm okay with it. It sucks, but I'm okay! haha Besides, today I wore a top that I haven't been able to wear for over 2 years! YAY!
So this past week I lost 5 lbs for a total of 40 lbs lost altogether. I have realized not to worry too much about the number on the scales - it's how I'm feeling that makes the difference! And I feel great!

On July 9th I had Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery and this is my journey! I want to be clear that I DO NOT think this surgery is a quick-fix for weightloss and every possible means should be taken before even considering this path. It is VERY difficult and if I knew then what I know now, I would have done more to lose the weight on my own! Having said that, I'm thankful for my new healthier life and am accepting and taking charge of MY weightloss journey! And... ALL the glory and honour goes to GOD!
You are doing awesome! Do you think it is all the exersize that you are doing? Your body is not too sure what you're doing. By the way, 5 lbs isnt a stall, its a LOST!! You'll learn that in second year my friend! :)

You forgot to mention the NSV of walking up the stairs without holding onto the rail and not panting after you reached the top. You did it like it was the normal way for you. That's a victory! You continue to inspire me.

Dayna, thank you for sharing your journey. I love hearing about all your successes and I love your excitement and enthusiasm! You are setting a wonderful example for your children and adding years to your life. Best wishes for many more NSVs!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you need a little encouragement with the vitamins, I'm sure Jeremy could give you a call. He's got a cupboard full of them and is on my case all the time to take them. I'm a work in progress too;) You are doing so great! I'm so proud of you.
